The Greek ministries of tourism and shipping have decided to coordinate their actions to achieve a sustainable cruise tourism development strategy.
The announcement came following a meeting on Thursday between Tourism Minister Vassilis Kikilias and Shipping Minister Giannis Plakiotakis.
During the meeting, Plakiotakis was informed that the Greek Tourism Ministry’s special study on how to achieve more sustainable tourism practices at the destinations of Mykonos and Santorini will be completed in the coming days.
The study will analyze the current situation on the two islands in terms of incoming tourist flows and their infrastructure. The aim is to transform the two destinations from ‘overcrowded peak season islands’ to ‘models of sustainable development’.
Moreover, the ministers also discussed Greece’s underwater parks project which will aim to enhance diving tourism, a form of tourism that brings added value to the country’s economy.
According to the tourism ministry, the two initiatives aim to contribute to the extension of Greece’s tourism season, increase tourist traffic, enhance economic development but also to protect the environment, as well as promote and protect underwater life.
